Construction Waste – Recycling & Diversion from Landfill

Recycling Week is the perfect opportunity to share our recycling partnerships in place on the Napier City Council Te Kete project.

We’re pleased to work in partnership with local businesses The Bin Hire Co (Blue Bins), Mitre 10 and Hastings Demolition to:

  • divert our construction waste from landfill (where possible)

  • recycle our construction waste

  • meet our Green Star requirements

  • achieve broader sustainability outcomes.

The Bin Hire Co work with MCLStead

The Bin Hire Co is currently supplying us with three 9.5sqm skip bins for timber and general construction waste. Once we have filled these bins The Bin Hire Co picks them up, transports them to their depot in Whakatu for weighing and sorting.

At the end of our first quarter on site we achieved 70% diversion from landfill of the 7.75 tons of construction waste removed from site.

ree

The Bin Hire Co is also working closely with us to track some of the data required to achieve Greenstar 5 accreditation on the Te Kete project.

Who are the Bin Hire Co?

For over 15 years Bin Hire Co has been at the forefront of the waste sector in Hawke’s Bay, building a legacy of reliability, innovation, purpose and turning the tide of waste by focusing on landfill diversion and responsible resource recovery.

The Bin Hire Co proudly operate two of the three transfer stations in the Hawke’s Bay Region and their own dedicated diversion facility – each driven by the same goal: reducing waste to landfill.

ree

What is Bin Hire Co’s operation?

At the heart of their operation is the Whakatu Diversion Facility, a custom-built sorting centre designed in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment under the Tiakina a Papatūānuku initiative. This project targets construction and demolition waste, giving new life to materials that would otherwise be buried and forgotten.

With 20 trucks on the road daily and a fleet of over 400 skip and hook bins and 5,000 wheelie bins they service households and industries across the Hawke’s Bay region.

Collection is just the beginning! Whether it’s general waste, green waste, plastics, cardboard or paper they work closely with customers to encourage separation at the source or bring it back to Whakatu where the team sorts it by hand and machine for maximum diversion.

ree

What volumes of waste does Bin Hire Co process?

On average they handle 850 tonnes per month.

Approximately 70% of the waste is diverted through recycling or repurposing. It’s not just about bins; it’s about accountability and impact.

What is Bin Hire Co’s Ethos?

Their success is made possible by the 57-strong team and a network of trusted partners both in NZ and overseas who help turn recovered materials into real outcomes. From timber to textiles, metals to plastics, the team is finding new pathways for old resources and doing it with integrity and heart.

Bin Hire Co challenges what waste means. In the right hands, almost anything can be a resource. That’s a future worth working for.

Mitre 10’s work with MCLStead

With a strong focus on product, service and sustainability, Mitre 10 are currently supplying us with labelled bins for cardboard, building plastics and timber to divert from landfill. As the construction on the Te Kete progresses, further bins will be provided to collect

plasterboard, polystyrene and other recyclable or reusable materials.

MCLStead’s partnership with Mitre 10 focuses on:

  • Education – building awareness across teams and subcontractors on more sustainable building practices.

  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Compliance – Chain of Custody accreditation ensures timber products are ethically and responsibly sourced and traceable.

  • Recovered Materials Diversion – working together alongside Blue Bins to increase recovery and reuse, reducing waste to landfill.

  • Sustainability Attribute Information – providing transparent data on product sustainability attributes to support informed decision-making.

Mitre 10 is also working closely with us to track some of the data and broader sustainability outcomes required to achieve Greenstar 5 accreditation on the Te Kete project.

This collaboration not only supports compliance but also strengthens our environmental leadership, enabling us to demonstrate a positive position with all involved.

Who is Mitre 10?

Mitre 10 is not just your local hardware store! New Zealand’s most trusted home improvement and garden retailer is also the trusted partner of the Kiwi construction industry, with expert Trade teams and solutions to support every stage of the job, from foundation to fence line.

They work with industry partners to develop circular solutions across product ranges and services, helping both trade and retail customers make more sustainable choices every day.

What products does Mitre 10 recycle?

In their own operations, Mitre 10 stores recycle as cardboard, plastic pallet wrap, uniforms, and waste timber (e.g. pallets). The offer product stewardships to help customers dispose of materials that are otherwise hard to recycle:

  • Plastic garden pots

Mitre 10 Trade is also involved in several pilots and trials targeting construction and demolition waste, such as plasterboard, PVC and HDPE offcuts, paint, and polystyrene insulation.

What volumes of these products does Mitre 10 recycle?

The plasterboard recycling trial here in Hawkes Bay has diverted over 24 tonnes of GIB from landfill since May 2025.

Nationally, Mitre 10’s in-store recycling programmes have diverted many tonnes of waste from landfill since they were introduced:

  • Pot Recycle – 97.2 tonnes (5.1m pots)

  • Lightbulbs – 20.4 tonnes
